Screens: A Mixed Blessing

Technology offers many blessings — access to learning, the ability to connect with loved ones across distances, creative opportunities, and sometimes, just a moment of needed peace for parents.
Yet, we must also acknowledge the risks when screens slip from helpful tool to ever-present companion.

Physical impacts of too much screen time include poor sleep, reduced physical activity, and increased eye strain. Research shows that children who exceed two hours of recreational screen time per day are more likely to experience issues like obesity and disrupted sleep patterns.

A Teacher’s Perspective: What I’ve Seen First-hand

During my time teaching, I observed a growing trend: by the age of seven, many of my students were already needing glasses.
This concern is not isolated. The World Health Organization and the American Academy of Ophthalmology have recognised that excessive screen time, combined with insufficient outdoor play and natural light exposure, significantly increases the risk of early-onset myopia (short-sightedness) in children.
Behavioural optometrists and paediatric ophthalmologists widely support these findings, noting that prolonged close-up screen use — particularly at a young age — contributes to eye strain and vision development problems.
It is a powerful reminder of the importance of creating daily rhythms filled with outdoor play, natural light, and screen-free exploration to support our children’s healthy growth

Emotionally, screens can sometimes replace the human interactions that children so vitally need to thrive. Studies have linked excessive screen time to increased rates of anxiety, attention difficulties, and social withdrawal.

Spiritually, constant digital noise can crowd out the gentle whisper of God's voice in their hearts. It can distract from moments of wonder, reflection, and connection with Him.

"Be still, and know that I am God." – Psalm 46:10

In a world that prizes being constantly busy and endlessly entertained, God’s gentle command to "be still" reminds us to seek moments of quiet for ourselves and our children.

Special Note: Screens and Babies Under 2

If you are raising babies or toddlers under the age of two, this is especially important:

Leading health organisations recommend no screen time for babies under 2 years old (except for video chatting with family). Here's why:

  • Brain Development: The infant brain grows most rapidly through real-world interaction — seeing a smiling face, hearing live voices, touching and exploring. Screens do not provide the same rich stimulation.

  • Language Development: Studies show that babies learn language far better from real conversations than from even the best educational videos.

  • Sleep and Blue Light: Screens emit blue light, which suppresses melatonin production. Exposure, particularly before bedtime, can disrupt a baby's precious sleep cycles — critical for growth and emotional regulation.

  • Vision Concerns: Babies' developing eyes are not designed for intense, close-up blue light exposure, raising long-term concerns about eye health.

Every moment spent face-to-face, reading a story, singing a song, or simply being together, is a far richer gift than anything a screen can offer.

The Bright Side of Screens

Yet, let's not fall into despair! Technology also brings tremendous opportunities:

  • Christian media and apps can teach children Bible stories, worship songs, and Scripture memory.

  • Video calls allow children to stay connected with faraway family members, strengthening bonds of love.

  • Educational games can boost literacy, numeracy, and creativity when used thoughtfully.

  • Creative expression – from coding simple games to designing digital art – can develop valuable talents and interests.

When used mindfully and prayerfully, screens can be tools to build up rather than tear down.

"Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." – 1 Corinthians 10:31

Our use of technology can be an act of worship when done thoughtfully. Even a simple family movie night, infused with joy, gratitude, and togetherness, can glorify God!

Gentle, Practical Steps Forward

🌿 Be Present First: Relationship and interaction are more nourishing than any app or video.

🌿 Tech-Free Spaces and Times: Create screen-free zones — especially bedrooms, mealtimes, and family devotion times.

🌿 Mindful Limits: Set reasonable, age-appropriate limits for daily screen time (for example, no more than one hour a day for children aged 2–5, as recommended by paediatric guidelines).

🌿 Model Healthy Use: Children learn far more from what we do than what we say.

🌿 Prioritise Sleep: Avoid screens for at least 60 minutes before bedtime to protect melatonin production and sleep quality.

🌿 Pray for Wisdom: Ask the Lord for guidance tailored to your unique family.

Encouragement for Weary Hearts

If you are feeling overwhelmed or guilty by the “screen battle” some days - please lay that burden down. Parenting in the digital age is a new challenge, and none of us gets it perfectly right.
God sees your heart, your love, and your desire to do well by your precious children.

You are not alone. You are walking this road with the Good Shepherd beside you.

"He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms and carry them close to his heart."Isaiah 40:11

Screen Time Prayer

Father God,
Thank You for the many good gifts You have given, including the gift of technology.
Please grant us wisdom as we guide our children in a world full of screens.
Help us to protect their eyes, their minds, and their hearts.
Show us when to say "yes" with joy and when to say "no" with courage.
Teach us to create homes where stillness, wonder, laughter, and Your presence are always more captivating than any glowing screen.
Let our children's hearts be tuned first and foremost to You.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Until next time, stay blessed, stay steady, and stay wonder-filled!

With love and laughter,
V.A.
